The large-format Los Angeles Travel Book is printed as part of a finite run of 30 of its kind, with each receiving a number as well as a signature from the artist who crafted it, Javier Mariscal. This Spanish graphic designer, illustrator, filmmaker, sculptor, painter and ceramist is drawn towards California, explaining that the clarity of its blue skies and fresh white light call to mind his birthplace, Valencia. During the artist's fifth journey to LA, he illustrated the surrounding scenery, objects and figures on his iPad and in his sketchbook, deriving inspiration from the store signs, advertisements, slogans, neon lights and logos he passed. Javier Mariscal has a wealth of experience, having crafted film posters for Pedro Almodóvar and magazine covers for The New Yorker. He has been honing his creative expertise since the 1970s, when his inaugural comic strips were published. On the cusp of the 80s, he cemented his reputation by masterminding the renowned BAR CEL ONA logo, along with the Dúplex barstool design that triggered his involvement in the Memphis group and Ettore Sottsass' emblematic 1981 display in Milan. A particularly esteemed creation by Mariscal is Cobi, the 1992 Barcelona Olympics mascot. He also produced an animation alongside film-making icon Fernando Trueba, which was put forward for an Oscar in 2012. Louis Vuitton Travel Books lure readers on both imaginary and real-life journeys.
