Taking in Sarah van Rij’s photographs is akin to watching a lunar eclipse: the chiaroscuro of her black and white shots gradually gives way to red tones, by turns calming or strident, in her colour work. Reflections, shadows, hidden faces and furtive silhouettes parade through a series of scenes brought together in perfect harmony, with hints of faded beauty. In each image, the gentle essence of the atmosphere captured confronts the palpable excitement of a Seoul in constant motion, with its pedestrians and their gestures. The photographer’s desire to chronicle her impressions of a brief stay is clear. Whether racing down the street, stopping for a coffee, waiting for the subway or peering through windows, she conveys the delicacy of every moment. Born in the Netherlands in 1990, Sarah van Rij fell in love with film as a child before purchasing her first camera at the age of 22. She honed her photography skills while working as creative director for a lifestyle and fashion retailer in Amsterdam. Alongside her personal work, van Rij brings her vision to commissioned projects for a wide range of fashion and editorial clients. Her images have featured in the pages of prestigious newspapers and magazines, from Vogue Italia and M le magazine du Monde to The New York Times. Inspired by the House's travel heritage, the Louis Vuitton Fashion Eye Collection evokes cities, regions or countries through the eyes of fashion photographers, from emerging talents to industry legends. Each title in the series features an extensive selection of large-format photographs, together with biographical information and an interview with the photographer or a critical essay. After Louis Vuitton City Guides and Travel Books, this third collection presents travel photography with a fashion perspective, as the chosen photographers all infuse their images of great cities, faraway places or dream destinations with their unique vision.
